March 2026 Tax Deadlines: Tip Reporting and Appointment Reminders

With the April filing deadline looming just around the corner, March serves as a critical transition month. For our clients across Long Island—from Medford to Mastic—this is the time to finalize documentation and ensure your calendar is clear for tax preparation. Here are the specific dates and actions you need to track for March 2026.

March 10: Tip Reporting Deadline

For those working in the service industry, tip reporting is a monthly compliance requirement that directly impacts your end-of-year tax picture. If you received more than $20 in tips during February, you must report them to your employer by March 10.

You can use IRS Form 4070 to submit this information, or provide a signed statement containing:

  • Your name, address, and Social Security number.
  • Your employer’s name and address.
  • The period the report covers (February).
  • The total tips received.

Understanding Withholding on Tips

When you report these tips, your employer withholds FICA and income taxes from your regular wages to cover the liability. If your regular wages aren't sufficient to cover the tax withholding for those tips, the uncollected amount will be reported in Box 8 of your W-2. You will then be responsible for paying that uncollected withholding when you file your annual return. Accurate reporting now prevents surprise tax bills later.

March 16: The Strategic Time to Book Your Appointment

While April 15 is the official deadline, we consider mid-March the practical cutoff for scheduling your tax preparation without rushing. If you haven't secured a slot on our calendar yet, we strongly recommend reaching out now. Our schedule fills up rapidly with clients from Brentwood and surrounding areas as the deadline approaches.

Don't Wait for Perfect Paperwork

A common mistake taxpayers make is waiting until they have every single receipt in hand before calling us. Please do not let a missing document delay your appointment. We can begin the process with what you have and create a "homework list" for the missing items. It is far more efficient to get the process started early.

Planning for Extensions

If you suspect you won't be ready to file by April, it is still vital to contact us in March. An extension to file is not an extension to pay. We need to prepare a preliminary return to estimate your tax liability so you can pay any balance due by the April deadline. This step is crucial for minimizing interest and avoiding late-payment penalties.

Standard Rules & Disaster Relief

Weekends & Holidays Rule:
Per IRS regulations, if a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically pushed to the next business day.

Disaster Area Extensions:
Deadlines are often adjusted for taxpayers located in federally declared disaster areas. To check if your area is affected and view updated deadlines, please consult the official resources below:
