2026 Charitable Giving Tax Changes for Long Island

Starting in 2026, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 2021 (OBBBA) will reshape how taxpayers handle charitable giving. For individuals and businesses across Long Island—from Medford to Brentwood and Mastic—these adjustments require proactive tax planning.

The 0.5% AGI Floor for Itemizers

If you itemize deductions, the new rules introduce a 0.5% of Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) contribution floor. You can only deduct charitable gifts that exceed this 0.5% threshold. This shift may reduce the tax benefits of smaller donations.

New Perks for Non-Itemizers

Conversely, taxpayers claiming the standard deduction will gain a specific tax break for cash contributions. Single filers can deduct up to $1,000, while joint filers can claim up to $2,000.
